Civil War nurse, physician, lecturer, author and suffragette. How has the remarkable life of Dr. Mary Jane Safford escaped remembrance for so long? This presentation reintroduces this dynamic woman to today’s audience.
In the late 19th century, Dr. Mary Jane Safford (1831-1891) was nationally prominent in women’s circles but somehow her name is unfamiliar today. Following a short career as a Civil War nurse, she traveled extensively through Europe and western Asia before seeking further medical training. She wrote prolifically on medicine, travel, progressive reforms, race relations and temperance.
For nearly the last 10 years of her life, Dr. Safford lived and practiced medicine in what was at that time western Hillsborough County. Join Doctor Elizabeth Coachman as she shares Safford’s story during this month’s Florida Conversations.
