OLLI Course: Florida’s Land Boom and the Tampa Connection

Florida in the 1920s was a magnet for developers, speculators and dreamers. Millions came here, where you could buy a plot of land today and sell it for double tomorrow, looking for paradise and a fast buck. Learn about the characters who created the land boom that started in south Florida and made its way to the Tampa Bay area. Discover the stories behind George Merrick and Coral Gables, D.P. Davis and Davis Islands, Perry Snell and Snell Isle. Plus, learn about the Hillsborough County case study “Land Boom and Bust,” and examine the effort to build a Hollywood-themed community in Sun City. This USF OLLI course is offered in-person and virtually on April 6, 13 and 20 by instructor Nancy Dalence.
