DESCRIPTION:A HarpSound Live! concert\n“Jazz: Then and Now” brings the sound of jazz to life through live performance and stories from the Tampa Bay area’s music past. Throughout the evening\, Dick Rumore\, former owner of Paragon Music Center\, will share stories about the history of jazz in the Tampa Bay area\, giving the audience a closer look at the people\, places and performances that helped shape the local scene. \nThe concert features clarinetist Frankie Brown Jr.\, saxophonist Al Chisolm and GQ Sound. Chisolm is a longtime presence in the Tampa Bay area music community whose career includes USO tours across the United States\, performances with The On Que Players and ongoing work as a solo artist. A self-taught musician\, he is known for a style shaped by gospel\, soul and instrumental jazz. \nA production of Unlimited Gospel Expressions\, the concert is sponsored by the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival and will be held at the future home of Tampa’s Black History Museum. \nGET TICKETS \nTogether\, these artists offer a program that honors the foundations of jazz while showing why the music still matters. “Jazz: Then and Now” is a chance to hear outstanding musicians\, learn more about the Tampa Bay area’s jazz history and spend an evening with music that continues to leave its mark.

DESCRIPTION:The City of Tampa’s Women’s History Month Celebration began in 1997 by City employees to recognize the many accomplishments of the City’s female employees.\n\nEach year\, the Women’s History Month Committee solicits nominations for the Josephine Howard Stafford Memorial Award. The Josephine Howard Stafford Memorial Award was adopted to honor a current or former City of Tampa female employee who demonstrates outstanding commitment to her position and the community. The award is given in memory of Ms. Stafford\, who devoted 24 years to the City of Tampa as an Assistant City Attorney. DESCRIPTION:Fifty years of celebrating Black History Month (1976-2026)\nJoin us at the Fifth Annual Black History Month Reception on Friday\, Feb. 27\, 2026\, at Tampa’s Black History Museum\, 1213 N. Central Ave.\, Tampa. This year’s reception marks a milestone\, as it is the first time the event will be held at the museum. Doors open at 5 p.m.\, and the evening begins with a reception featuring soul food bites\, refreshments\, and live cultural performances. \nThe program includes performances by the Dundu Dole Urban African Ballet\, spoken word\, and musical entertainment. Guest speaker Jai Hinson will address the audience during the program. The evening will also feature the presentation of the Dr. Bernard LaFayette Jr. Sankofa Award to the Florida Sentinel Bulletin\, which has served the community since 1945. In addition\, the Thurgood Marshall History Award\, a $1\,000 donation\, will be presented to a Hillsborough County public high school recognized for the most outstanding Thurgood Marshall History Club project. \nSOLD OUT \nThe reception is sponsored by the Tampa Housing Authority and presented by the Tampa Bay History Center. Each year\, the event recognizes Black History Month and honors the legacy of Rev. Dr. Bernard LaFayette Jr.\, a Tampa native from Ybor City and board chairman of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The annual observance traces its roots to 1926\, when Dr. Carter G. Woodson launched Negro History Week\, and to 1976\, when President Gerald Ford formally recognized February as Black History Month. \nComplimentary parking will be available with three options\, including Ray Charles Boulevard and the Tempo and Trio parking garages.

SUMMARY:Black History Month Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Tampa Bay History Center will host the fourth annual Black History Month Reception on Feb. 28\, 2025\, at 801 Water St.\, Tampa. The evening begins with a reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Lykes Atrium on the second floor\, followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. in TECO Hall. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. \nThis year’s keynote speaker is Leonard George Jr.\, Esq.\, a West Tampa native and trailblazer in sports and media. In 1968\, George became the first African American to sign a football scholarship with the University of Florida\, paving the way for future Black athletes. A 1969 graduate of Tampa’s Jesuit High School\, he helped lead the Tigers to their first Florida high school football state championship. After completing his senior season with the Florida Gators\, George pursued a career in television journalism at WTOG in Tampa\, later practicing law in Atlanta and Tallahassee\, including work with the Florida attorney general’s office. His life and legacy are highlighted in the documentary “Leonard George and the Tigers.” \nJoining George is Dr. Rozelia Kennedy\, who will present the Dr. Bernard LaFayette History Award\, honoring an individual dedicated to preserving Black history. The evening’s program will be emceed by Emerald Morrow\, an investigative reporter with 10 Tampa Bay and an eight-time Emmy Award-winning journalist. \nGET TICKETS    LAST YEAR’s Photos  \nTickets include complimentary valet parking.
