SUMMARY:Black Roots: From Dobyville to College Hill
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with friends and neighbors who lived in 1960s Tampa during segregation. We’ll also watch a clip from the documentary film “The Tampa Technique.” \nBlack people in Tampa and the surrounding areas began organizing residential communities shortly after the Civil War ended on May 6\, 1864. For many years\, the largest of these areas (the Scrub) was located between downtown Tampa and Ybor City. This was the foundation of the Central Avenue District. But other Black communities also sprang up: a portion of Port Tampa and Hyde Park (Dobyville) south of today’s Kennedy Boulevard; Spring Hill (the Black section of Sulphur Springs); Bealsville (in eastern Hillsborough County); West Tampa (areas near the Hillsborough River) and College Hill (in the heart of East Tampa). \nBlack Roots: From Dobyville to College Hill is part of a Tampa Bay History Center initiative in partnership with the Tampa Housing Authority to provide educational experiences in the historic St. James Episcopal Church. \n  \nIn-Person Signup    ZOOM SIGNUP

SUMMARY:Book Group: "Painter in a Savage Land" by Miles Harvey
DESCRIPTION:In this vibrantly told\, meticulously researched book\, Miles Harvey reveals one of the most fascinating and overlooked lives in American history. Like The Island of Lost Maps\, his bestselling book about a legendary map thief\, Painter in a Savage Land is a compelling search into the mysteries of the past. This is the thrilling story of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues\, the first European artist to journey to what is now the continental United States with the express purpose of recording its wonders in pencil and paint. Le Moyne’s images\, which survive today in a series of spectacular engravings\, provide a rare glimpse of Native American life at the pivotal time of first contact with the Europeans–most of whom arrived with the preconceived notion that the New World was an almost mythical place in which anything was possible. Read more on Amazon \nJohn B. Neukamm share’s this month’s review. \nGrab a cup of coffee and join us monthly for an informal discussion about the best in Florida literature. Topics range from fiction to food\, poetry to politics. Free with registration\, the History Center’s book group meets in person and via Zoom from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month. Everyone is welcome! \nJOIN THE GROUP
