DESCRIPTION:Join docent Amy Tyrrell for a 20-minute guided walkthrough of Cigar City and discover how Tampa became one of the world’s leading cigar manufacturing centers. Amy connects Henry B. Plant’s transportation network with Vicente Martinez Ybor’s cigar factories\, revealing how industry and immigration transformed a small Florida community into the city of Tampa. \nExplore maps\, photographs and historical artifacts while learning about Ybor City’s immigrant communities\, mutual aid societies and connections to the Cuban War of Independence. Discover why Tampa’s historic cigars were called clear Havana cigars\, how lectors shaped daily life inside the factories and how the cigar industry influenced Tampa’s development and identity. \nAmy has served as a docent at the Ybor City Museum State Park for five years and works part-time at the Henry B. Plant Museum. Her experience with both institutions provides visitors with a distinct perspective on the relationship among Plant’s transportation system\, Ybor’s cigar industry and Tampa’s growth. \nAbout gallery tours\nDocent-led gallery tours invite guests to examine artifacts\, maps\, photographs and other historical materials from the History Center’s collections while hearing accurate\, well-researched accounts of the people\, events and industries that shaped Tampa Bay. \nDuring each 20-minute tour\, an experienced docent interprets selected artifacts and displays\, explains what they reveal about the past and answers visitor questions. This $5 downtown event is designed for Gen Z and millennials ages 18 to 30 looking for something different from another bar or restaurant trivia night. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us July 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the History Center’s Crow’s Nest for pizza and snacks and browse our temporary exhibit “America at the Crossroads: The Guitar and a Changing Nation.” When trivia begins\,  teams will compete for prizes while answering questions tied to history\, civics and American culture. Tickets include pizza\, drinks\, snacks and time in the gallery. Bring a team\, come with friends or meet one here. \nThis event is part of Civic Season\, a national movement from Juneteenth through July Fourth that connects history\, civic life and the future we are building. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Independence Day at the Tampa Bay History Center with “A Star-Spangled Story: Battle for America\,” a Smithsonian Channel documentary exploring the surprising history and secrets behind “The Star-Spangled Banner.” \n“The Star-Spangled Banner” is known by all\, treasured for its powerful melody and stirring lyrics. And yet\, only about 40% of U.S. citizens know all the words. And even fewer know their meaning. Join us as we travel back to 1814\, when Washington D.C. was under British attack during the “Second War of Independence\,” and the very bricks and mortar of American democracy were reduced to smoking rubble. SUMMARY:Chinsegut Hill House Tour on Saturday at 10 a.m.
DESCRIPTION:Set atop one of Florida’s highest elevations and surrounded by a 114-acre preserve\, the historic home at Chinsegut Hill offers an intimate look at more than 170 years of Florida history. Built in the 1850s as the center of a plantation\, the house later became home to farmers\, politicians and reformers\, including Raymond and Margaret Robins\, who welcomed guests such as Helen Keller\, Thomas Edison and J.C. Penney. During the Great Depression\, the property became part of a federal agricultural research and conservation program\, beginning another chapter in its long public history. \nOn a guided tour\, explore the home’s rooms\, architecture and changing uses while learning about the people who shaped the property across generations. Their stories connect Chinsegut Hill to plantation-era Florida\, emancipation\, agriculture\, politics\, social reform\, conservation and historic preservation. Together\, they reveal why this hilltop home remains one of West Central Florida’s most distinctive historic places. \nGET TICKETS \nGuided house tours are offered Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m.\, noon and 2 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for youth ages 6 to 12. Admission is free for children ages 5 and younger and Tampa Bay History Center members.
