DESCRIPTION:Join docent Amy Tyrrell for a 20-minute guided walkthrough of Cigar City and discover how Tampa became one of the world’s leading cigar manufacturing centers. Amy connects Henry B. Plant’s transportation network with Vicente Martinez Ybor’s cigar factories\, revealing how industry and immigration transformed a small Florida community into the city of Tampa. \nExplore maps\, photographs and historical artifacts while learning about Ybor City’s immigrant communities\, mutual aid societies and connections to the Cuban War of Independence. Discover why Tampa’s historic cigars were called clear Havana cigars\, how lectors shaped daily life inside the factories and how the cigar industry influenced Tampa’s development and identity. \nAmy has served as a docent at the Ybor City Museum State Park for five years and works part-time at the Henry B. Plant Museum. Her experience with both institutions provides visitors with a distinct perspective on the relationship among Plant’s transportation system\, Ybor’s cigar industry and Tampa’s growth. \nAbout gallery tours\nDocent-led gallery tours invite guests to examine artifacts\, maps\, photographs and other historical materials from the History Center’s collections while hearing accurate\, well-researched accounts of the people\, events and industries that shaped Tampa Bay. \nDuring each 20-minute tour\, an experienced docent interprets selected artifacts and displays\, explains what they reveal about the past and answers visitor questions. Jim connects individual maps on topics such as Indigenous communities\, European explorers\, settlers\, U.S. troops and Seminoles\, showing how geography influenced encounters\, transportation routes and the growth of communities across the state. \nOn this gallery tour\, Jim discusses concepts such as Indigenous groups and foreign explorers\, competition for territory during the 1800s and the military roads that connected Florida communities. \nJim previously worked in communications for local nonprofits. After moving to Tampa and spending time at the History Center\, he developed a broader understanding of Florida history and an appreciation for maps as more than tools for finding a route. DESCRIPTION:Explore Ybor City with Evangeline “Van” Linkous\, Ph.D.\, AICP\, a History Center-trained guide and USF professor who teaches urban planning history. Her courses examine industrialization\, mutual aid societies\, highway development\, suburbanization and downtown revitalization\, all central to Ybor City’s development.  \nDuring this 90-minute tour\, Van connects her academic expertise with the cigar factories\, social clubs\, brick streets and landmark buildings along the route. Guests will learn how Ybor developed as a central hub of the United States’ cigar industry and how it emerged as a rare multi-ethnic and multi-racial industrial community in the Deep South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Van also provides her urban planning expertise to share the story of Ybor’s post-war transformations and the processes shaping Ybor today. \nLocal guests learn how major developments in American urban history unfolded close to home. Visitors from outside Tampa will gain a clear understanding of how Ybor became one of the city’s most distinctive historic districts. \nThe tour begins at a new location: Parque Amigos de José Martí\, or Friends of José Martí Park\, 1303 E. Eighth Ave.\, Tampa\, FL 33605. Participants will walk approximately one mile along public sidewalks and brick streets. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Guests may also want to bring bottled water. \nAdvance tickets are required\, and space is limited to 25 guests. After moving to Tampa and spending time at the History Center\, he developed a broader understanding of Florida history and an appreciation for maps as more than tools for finding a route. DESCRIPTION:Explore West Tampa with Fred Hearns\, one of Tampa Bay’s foremost historians and the Tampa Bay History Center’s first curator of Black history. A longtime journalist\, community leader and former City of Tampa human rights director\, Hearns has spent decades researching and preserving the stories of Tampa’s Black residents\, neighborhoods and institutions. \nDuring this 90-minute tour\, Hearns guides guests through significant sites connected to West Tampa’s Black history. The route includes the former site of J. W. Roberts City\, West Tampa’s first brick cigar factory; the University of Tampa’s I. W. Phillips Field football stadium; Clara Frye Memorial Hospital\, which provided medical care to Black patients during segregation; Tampa’s first public housing development; and the childhood homes of prominent figures in Hillsborough County’s Black community. \nLocal guests will gain a deeper understanding of a neighborhood whose history is often overlooked. Visitors from outside Tampa will discover how West Tampa’s cigar industry\, community institutions and Black residents contributed to the development of the wider Tampa Bay region. \nThe tour meets inside Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park. Look for the Bob Buckhorn River Center\, 402 N. Laurel St.\, Tampa\, FL 33607\, and meet your guide at the flagpole. \nParticipants will walk approximately eight blocks along public sidewalks. Participants will explore the people\, places\, events and experiences that have shaped the county and continue to define its communities today. \nThe course meets Wednesdays\, Dec. 2\, 9 and 16\, 2026\, from 10 a.m. to noon at Tampa’s Black History Museum\, 1213 N. Central Ave.\, Tampa\, FL 33602. \nThe Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Florida is part of USF’s Office of University Strategic Partnerships and is powered by a dedicated team of USF employees in partnership with a passionate community of volunteers. SUMMARY:OLLI-USF: The History of Hillsborough County’s Communities
DESCRIPTION:The distinct histories of Hillsborough County’s cities\, towns and rural communities have contributed to the development of the region. \nThis three-part course explores communities throughout Hillsborough County\, including Tampa\, Plant City\, Temple Terrace and areas across East\, Northwest and South Hillsborough County. Participants will explore the people\, places\, events and experiences that have shaped the county and continue to define its communities today. \nThe course meets Wednesdays\, Dec. 2\, 9 and 16\, 2026\, from 10 a.m. to noon at Tampa’s Black History Museum\, 1213 N. Central Ave.\, Tampa\, FL 33602. \nThe Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Florida is part of USF’s Office of University Strategic Partnerships and is powered by a dedicated team of USF employees in partnership with a passionate community of volunteers. OLLI-USF offers engaging\, no-pressure learning experiences for adults age 50 and older\, creating opportunities to explore new ideas\, connect with peers and stay intellectually active. \nRegistration opens Aug. 31 and will be available through OLLI-USF. \nREGISTER
