SUMMARY:Florida Conversations: Tampa’s Historic Streetcars
DESCRIPTION:Digital Preservation and Urban Heritage\nLearn about Tampa’s historic streetcar system\, an iconic element of the city’s urban heritage that connects the past to the present. Residents and visitors may be familiar with the modern replica streetcars that traverse Tampa\, but there are two additional archival streetcars from the early 20th century that rarely make it out of Hillsborough County’s carbarn. This presentation discusses a University of South Florida project to scan the streetcars and stations to create a digital archive for the City of Tampa. \nSteven Fernandez\, MA\, GISP\, CCM\, Univ. of South Florida\, Associate Instructor & Director of Smart City Technology Graduate Certificate \nLaura Harrison\, PhD\, RPA\, Univ. of South Florida\, Assistant Research Professor & Director of Access 3D Lab \nIn Person Sign Up    ZOOM Sign Up

SUMMARY:Book Group: "Through the Groves: A Memoir" by Anne Hull
DESCRIPTION:Anne Hull grew up in rural Central Florida\, barefoot half the time and running through the orange groves her father’s family had worked for generations. The ground trembled from the vibrations of bulldozers and jackhammers clearing land for Walt Disney World. “Look now\,” her father told her as they rode through the mossy landscape together. “It will all be gone.” But the real threat was at home\, where Hull was pulled between her idealistic but self-destructive father and her mother\, a glamorous outsider from Brooklyn struggling with her own aspirations. All the while\, Hull felt the pressures of girlhood closing in. Read more on Amazon \nVal Wolf shares this month’s review. \nGrab a cup of coffee and join us monthly for an informal discussion about the best in Florida literature. Topics range from fiction to food\, poetry to politics. Free with registration\, the History Center’s book group meets in person and via Zoom from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month. Everyone is welcome! \nJOIN THE GROUP
