Plant’s transportation network with Vicente Martinez Ybor’s cigar factories\, revealing how industry and immigration transformed a small Florida community into the city of Tampa. \nExplore maps\, photographs and historical artifacts while learning about Ybor City’s immigrant communities\, mutual aid societies and connections to the Cuban War of Independence. Discover why Tampa’s historic cigars were called clear Havana cigars\, how lectors shaped daily life inside the factories and how the cigar industry influenced Tampa’s development and identity. \nAmy has served as a docent at the Ybor City Museum State Park for five years and works part-time at the Henry B. Plant Museum. DESCRIPTION:A History of Florida’s Film and Television Industry\nIn this program\, historian David Morton\, Ph.D.\, explores Florida’s overlooked role in shaping the American film and television industries. He traces how the state emerged as a “third coast” for entertainment over the last century\, beginning with Jacksonville’s pioneering film studios of the early 1900s and continuing through South Florida’s television boom of the 2000s and 2010s. \nFrom silent reels to streaming culture\, Florida has provided a stage for countless stories that captured national attention. \nMorton received his Ph.D. in Texts and Technology from the University of Central Florida in 2019\, where he teaches History and Media Studies. \nA 2016–17 Fulbright scholar and program director for the Flickering Landscapes Conference Series\, Morton is also the author of A Motion Picture Paradise!: A History of Florida’s Film and Television Industry\, published in July 2024 by the University Press of Florida. \nFlorida Conversations will be presented in person in TECO Hall and virtually through Zoom. The Tampa Bay History Center invites you to step into the stories of West Tampa’s Black community with this powerful 90-minute walking tour. As part of our walking tour series\, this experience uncovers the places and people who shaped Tampa’s history and left an enduring impact on the city. \nAlong the way\, you will visit the former sites of J. W. Roberts City\, West Tampa’s first brick cigar factory\, and I. W. Phillips Field\, the University of Tampa’s early football stadium. You will also stop at Clara Frye Memorial Hospital for Negro patients\, Tampa’s first public housing development\, and the childhood homes of notable figures in Hillsborough County’s Black community. \nTours are limited to 25 participants and cover approximately half to one mile along public sidewalks. Please wear comfortable shoes and attire for walking outdoors. \nThe tour lasts 90 minutes and begins at 10 a.m. Participants will meet inside Julian B. DESCRIPTION:The Hillsborough County Historical Advisory Council will dedicate a new marker at the Historic Wimauma Memorial Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday\, Nov. 21\, at 6014 Edina St.\, Wimauma. The public is invited to attend; no reservation is required. \nFounded in the late 1800s\, the cemetery was originally established as the burial ground for the formerly enslaved and early African American residents of southern Hillsborough County. SUMMARY:OLLI-USF: History of the Florida Everglades
DESCRIPTION:Delve into the rich history of the Florida Everglades\, from its significance to Indigenous People to the impact of early development and land use. Learners will explore how historical decisions shaped the landscape and laid the foundation for today’s conservation challenges. The course will take place on Wednesday\, October 1\, 8\, and 15 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (three 2-hour sessions). The total fee for all three dates is $45.  \nREGISTER ONLINE    COURSE CATALOG \nThe Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at USF (OLLI-USF) is a member-based learning community for adults aged 50+. It offers classes\, workshops\, lectures\, events\, and social networking. OLLI provides high-quality\, low-cost learning opportunities for seasoned adults across West Central Florida. \nThe History Center is offering two courses this fall. Course registration is conducted through the USF OLLI website. History Center members can have their OLLI-USF member fee (not the course fee) waived by calling Charisse Dixon at (813) 974-5848.

SUMMARY:Cigar City: Bringing Industry to Tampa
DESCRIPTION:Join docent Amy Tyrrell for a 20-minute guided walkthrough of Cigar City and discover how Tampa became one of the world’s leading cigar manufacturing centers. Amy connects Henry B. Plant’s transportation network with Vicente Martinez Ybor’s cigar factories\, revealing how industry and immigration transformed a small Florida community into the city of Tampa. \nExplore maps\, photographs and historical artifacts while learning about Ybor City’s immigrant communities\, mutual aid societies and connections to the Cuban War of Independence. Discover why Tampa’s historic cigars were called clear Havana cigars\, how lectors shaped daily life inside the factories and how the cigar industry influenced Tampa’s development and identity. \nAmy has served as a docent at the Ybor City Museum State Park for five years and works part-time at the Henry B. Plant Museum. Her experience with both institutions provides visitors with a distinct perspective on the relationship among Plant’s transportation system\, Ybor’s cigar industry and Tampa’s growth. \nAbout gallery tours\nDocent-led gallery tours invite guests to examine artifacts\, maps\, photographs and other historical materials from the History Center’s collections while hearing accurate\, well-researched accounts of the people\, events and industries that shaped Tampa Bay. \nDuring each 20-minute tour\, an experienced docent interprets selected artifacts and displays\, explains what they reveal about the past and answers visitor questions. For first-time visitors\, a gallery tour provides a focused introduction to the History Center’s collections and a strong starting point for exploring the galleries.
