SUMMARY:Ybor City Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore Ybor City with Evangeline “Van” Linkous\, Ph.D.\, AICP\, a History Center-trained guide and USF professor who teaches urban planning history. Her courses examine industrialization\, mutual aid societies\, highway development\, suburbanization and downtown revitalization\, all central to Ybor City’s development.  \nDuring this 90-minute tour\, Van connects her academic expertise with the cigar factories\, social clubs\, brick streets and landmark buildings along the route. Guests will learn how Ybor developed as a central hub of the United States’ cigar industry and how it emerged as a rare multi-ethnic and multi-racial industrial community in the Deep South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Van also provides her urban planning expertise to share the story of Ybor’s post-war transformations and the processes shaping Ybor today. \nLocal guests learn how major developments in American urban history unfolded close to home. Visitors from outside Tampa will gain a clear understanding of how Ybor became one of the city’s most distinctive historic districts. \nThe tour begins at a new location: Parque Amigos de José Martí\, or Friends of José Martí Park\, 1303 E. Eighth Ave.\, Tampa\, FL 33605. Participants will walk approximately one mile along public sidewalks and brick streets. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Guests may also want to bring bottled water. \nAdvance tickets are required\, and space is limited to 25 guests. SUMMARY:Every Map Tells a Story
DESCRIPTION:Join docent Jim Dinsmore for a 20-minute guided tour of the Touchton Map Library and learn how maps document the people\, movement and conflicts that shaped Florida. Jim connects individual maps to stories of Indigenous communities\, European explorers\, settlers\, U.S. troops and Seminoles\, showing how geography influenced encounters\, transportation routes and the growth of communities across the state. \nGuests will see historic maps from the History Center’s collection and learn to read place names\, borders\, roads and other details as records of human activity. Jim discusses interactions among Indigenous groups and foreign explorers\, competition for territory during the 1800s and the military roads that connected Florida communities. One example studies a road planned by Gen. Abraham Eustis from St. Augustine to Tampa and its connection to the names of the city of Eustis and Lake Eustis. \nJim previously worked in communications for local nonprofits. After moving to Tampa and spending time at the History Center\, he developed a broader understanding of Florida history and an appreciation for maps as more than tools for finding a route. SUMMARY:Black History Book Club: "The Talented Ribkins" by Ladee Hubbard
DESCRIPTION:The Black History Book Club continues its fall season with a discussion of The Talented Ribkins by Ladee Hubbard on Oct. 26. \nFirst published in 2017\, the novel blends speculative fiction with social satire\, following a Black family whose inherited superhuman abilities are shaped as much by race and class as by power itself. Hubbard uses humor and genre to examine how American society defines value\, success and survival\, particularly for those navigating inherited systems of inequality. \nThis free event begins at 5:30 p.m. at 1213 N. Central Ave.\, at Tampa’s Black History Museum. Participants are invited to gather for a community-centered conversation reflecting on Black authorship\, imaginative storytelling and the ways narrative can challenge dominant cultural frameworks. SUMMARY:Ybor City Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore Ybor City with Evangeline “Van” Linkous\, Ph.D.\, AICP\, a History Center-trained guide and USF professor who teaches urban planning history. Her courses examine industrialization\, mutual aid societies\, highway development\, suburbanization and downtown revitalization\, all central to Ybor City’s development.  \nDuring this 90-minute tour\, Van connects her academic expertise with the cigar factories\, social clubs\, brick streets and landmark buildings along the route. Guests will learn how Ybor developed as a central hub of the United States’ cigar industry and how it emerged as a rare multi-ethnic and multi-racial industrial community in the Deep South in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Van also provides her urban planning expertise to share the story of Ybor’s post-war transformations and the processes shaping Ybor today. \nLocal guests learn how major developments in American urban history unfolded close to home. Visitors from outside Tampa will gain a clear understanding of how Ybor became one of the city’s most distinctive historic districts. \nThe tour begins at a new location: Parque Amigos de José Martí\, or Friends of José Martí Park\, 1303 E. Eighth Ave.\, Tampa\, FL 33605. Participants will walk approximately one mile along public sidewalks and brick streets. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Guests may also want to bring bottled water. \nAdvance tickets are required\, and space is limited to 25 guests. King examines nonviolent resistance\, political delay and the psychological toll of segregation while articulating a vision of justice rooted in democratic responsibility and human dignity. \nThis free event begins at 5:30 p.m. at 1213 N.
