Plant’s transportation network with Vicente Martinez Ybor’s cigar factories\, revealing how industry and immigration transformed a small Florida community into the city of Tampa. \nExplore maps\, photographs and historical artifacts while learning about Ybor City’s immigrant communities\, mutual aid societies and connections to the Cuban War of Independence. Discover why Tampa’s historic cigars were called clear Havana cigars\, how lectors shaped daily life inside the factories and how the cigar industry influenced Tampa’s development and identity. \nAmy has served as a docent at the Ybor City Museum State Park for five years and works part-time at the Henry B. Plant Museum. Her experience with both institutions provides visitors with a distinct perspective on the relationship among Plant’s transportation system\, Ybor’s cigar industry and Tampa’s growth. \nAbout gallery tours\nDocent-led gallery tours invite guests to examine artifacts\, maps\, photographs and other historical materials from the History Center’s collections while hearing accurate\, well-researched accounts of the people\, events and industries that shaped Tampa Bay. \nDuring each 20-minute tour\, an experienced docent interprets selected artifacts and displays\, explains what they reveal about the past and answers visitor questions. DESCRIPTION:A HarpSound Live! concert\n“Jazz: Then and Now” brings the sound of jazz to life through live performance and stories from the Tampa Bay area’s music past. Throughout the evening\, Dick Rumore\, former owner of Paragon Music Center\, will share stories about the history of jazz in the Tampa Bay area\, giving the audience a closer look at the people\, places and performances that helped shape the local scene. \nThe concert features clarinetist Frankie Brown Jr.\, saxophonist Al Chisolm and GQ Sound. Chisolm is a longtime presence in the Tampa Bay area music community whose career includes USO tours across the United States\, performances with The On Que Players and ongoing work as a solo artist. A self-taught musician\, he is known for a style shaped by gospel\, soul and instrumental jazz. \nA production of Unlimited Gospel Expressions\, the concert is sponsored by the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival and will be held at the future home of Tampa’s Black History Museum. \nGET TICKETS \nTogether\, these artists offer a program that honors the foundations of jazz while showing why the music still matters. “Jazz: Then and Now” is a chance to hear outstanding musicians\, learn more about the Tampa Bay area’s jazz history and spend an evening with music that continues to leave its mark.

Presented with support from the Frank E. Duckwall Foundation\, this year’s lecture marks the 140th anniversary of the first cigar rolled in Ybor City. \nDrawing on decades of research and personal encounters\, Dr. Mormino brings to life some of the most memorable figures in the Tampa Bay area’s past. From a lawyer with ties to organized crime to the legendary Tony Pizzo\, these stories reveal the personalities\, traditions and contradictions that shaped Ybor City and helped define Tampa. \nAt the heart of the lecture is Dr. Mormino’s enduring admiration for Ybor City\, a place whose legacy still resonates today. Blending scholarship with a gift for storytelling\, he offers an engaging look at the people and moments that continue to make this history so compelling. \nDr. Mormino is the Frank E. Duckwall Professor of History Emeritus at the University of South Florida\, St. Petersburg. He received the Florida Humanities 2015 Florida Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing and has served as a Florida Humanities scholar-in-residence. His many books include “Land of Sunshine\, State of Dreams” and “Dreams in the New Century: Instant Cities\, Shattered Hopes\, and Florida’s Turning Point.” \nEstablished in 1983\, the Frank E. DESCRIPTION:Ybor City began as a cigar-manufacturing town and grew into one of Tampa’s most distinctive historic districts. On this guided walking tour\, guests will hear how cigar makers\, factory workers\, immigrant families\, business owners\, and social clubs helped shape the neighborhood that became known around the world for hand-rolled cigars. \nLed by a History Center-trained docent\, the 90-minute tour explores Ybor City’s brick streets\, landmark buildings\, and 7th Avenue corridor while connecting the neighborhood’s cigar industry to the people and places that shaped daily life in Ybor City. Along the way\, guests will learn why Ybor City developed its own identity within Tampa and why so many of its historic buildings remain important today. \nThe tour begins at a new location: Parque Amigos de José Martí\, or Friends of José Martí Park\, 1303 E. Eighth Ave.\, Tampa\, FL 33605. Participants will walk approximately one mile along public sidewalks and brick streets. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Guests may also want to bring bottled water. \nAdvance tickets are required\, and space is limited to 25 guests. Plant’s transportation network with Vicente Martinez Ybor’s cigar factories\, revealing how industry and immigration transformed a small Florida community into the city of Tampa. \nExplore maps\, photographs and historical artifacts while learning about Ybor City’s immigrant communities\, mutual aid societies and connections to the Cuban War of Independence. Discover why Tampa’s historic cigars were called clear Havana cigars\, how lectors shaped daily life inside the factories and how the cigar industry influenced Tampa’s development and identity. \nAmy has served as a docent at the Ybor City Museum State Park for five years and works part-time at the Henry B. Plant Museum. Her experience with both institutions provides visitors with a distinct perspective on the relationship among Plant’s transportation system\, Ybor’s cigar industry and Tampa’s growth. \nAbout gallery tours\nDocent-led gallery tours invite guests to examine artifacts\, maps\, photographs and other historical materials from the History Center’s collections while hearing accurate\, well-researched accounts of the people\, events and industries that shaped Tampa Bay. \nDuring each 20-minute tour\, an experienced docent interprets selected artifacts and displays\, explains what they reveal about the past and answers visitor questions. For first-time visitors\, a gallery tour provides a focused introduction to the History Center’s collections and a strong starting point for exploring the galleries.
