SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Cinema in the Sunshine State
DESCRIPTION:Before Hollywood became the center of the movie industry\, filmmakers were already setting up cameras in Florida. \nOpening Sept. 19 at the Tampa Bay History Center\, Cinema in the Sunshine State explores more than a century of filmmaking across Florida through more than 50 original artifacts. See rare film ephemera\, 1920s theater projectors\, Edison-period cameras\, Tampa Theatre marquee letters and other objects gathered from institutions throughout the state. \nGET TICKETS \nThe exhibition traces Florida’s film history from the arrival of motion picture cameras in the late 1890s to memorable productions featuring Tarzan\, Esther Williams and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Visitors will discover how Jacksonville became an early center of American filmmaking and how Florida’s warm climate\, natural landscapes and distinctive communities helped attract generations of filmmakers. \nThe exhibition also celebrates the Tampa Theatre during its centennial year. Original furnishings\, blueprints and architectural elements reveal the craftsmanship behind one of the Tampa Bay area’s most recognizable landmarks. \nWhether you love classic movies\, Florida history\, graphic design or historic theaters\, Cinema in the Sunshine State offers a new look at the people\, places and promotional art that helped shape the movies Americans remember. \nCinema in the Sunshine State will be on exhibit in the Wayne Thomas Gallery from Saturday\, Sept. 19\, 2026\, through Sunday\, March 21\, 2027. The Tampa Bay History Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 801 Water St. in Tampa.

Jim connects individual maps on topics such as Indigenous communities\, European explorers\, settlers\, U.S. troops and Seminoles\, showing how geography influenced encounters\, transportation routes and the growth of communities across the state. \nOn this gallery tour\, Jim discusses concepts such as Indigenous groups and foreign explorers\, competition for territory during the 1800s and the military roads that connected Florida communities. \nJim previously worked in communications for local nonprofits. After moving to Tampa and spending time at the History Center\, he developed a broader understanding of Florida history and an appreciation for maps as more than tools for finding a route. Photo opportunities throughout the museum add to the festive spirit\, with every floor offering a new surprise. \nTimed entry begins at 2 p.m.\, with the final entry at 5 p.m. Select your ticket based on your preferred entry time. He is the author of “Everglades: America’s Wetland\,” “American Amazon: Ancient Forests and Living Waters of the Wild Southeastern U.S.” and “Cypress: The Last Old-Growth Swamps.” He worked as a producer and cinematographer on the “American Amazon” IMAX film and PBS NATURE series. Stone also serves as executive director of Naturaland Trust\, where he advances land conservation and restoration across the Southeast.

King examines nonviolent resistance\, political delay and the psychological toll of segregation while articulating a vision of justice rooted in democratic responsibility and human dignity. \nThis free event begins at 5:30 p.m. at 1213 N. DESCRIPTION:The distinct histories of Hillsborough County’s cities\, towns and rural communities have contributed to the development of the region. \nThis three-part course explores communities throughout Hillsborough County\, including Tampa\, Plant City\, Temple Terrace and areas across East\, Northwest and South Hillsborough County. Participants will explore the people\, places\, events and experiences that have shaped the county and continue to define its communities today. \nThe course meets Wednesdays\, Dec. 2\, 9 and 16\, 2026\, from 10 a.m. to noon at Tampa’s Black History Museum\, 1213 N. Central Ave.\, Tampa\, FL 33602. \nThe Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Florida is part of USF’s Office of University Strategic Partnerships and is powered by a dedicated team of USF employees in partnership with a passionate community of volunteers.
