Join the journey of learning and discussion with the Black History Book Club
Unveiling a new chapter in cultural exploration
We are excited to announce the launch of the Black History Book Club at St. James @ Encore! Starting Monday, Feb. 26, 2024, this initiative promises to be a beacon of knowledge, reflection, and community engagement in the heart of Tampa Bay.
Meeting minds and hearts
The club’s sessions will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the charming St. James @ Encore at 1202 N. Governor Street. These enriching discussions will occur on the last Monday of February, April, June, August, and October, and the second Monday in December 2024.

Two prominent figures will lead the discussions in the community:

A journey through literature
Each session will focus on a significant work of literature that has shaped or reflected the African American experience. Here’s what’s on the reading list for 2024:
- February 26: “Up From Slavery” by Booker T. Washington (Discussion leader: Fred Hearns)
- April 29: “The Miseducation of the Negro” by Carter G. Woodson (Discussion leader: Ashley Morrow)
- June 24: “In Peace and Freedom: My Journey in Selma” by Bernard LaFayette, Jr. (Discussion leader: Fred Hearns)
- August 26: “Open Season: Legalized Genocide of Colored People” by Ben Crump (Discussion leader: Ashley Morrow)
- October 28: “Brother Ray: Ray Charles’ Own Story” by Ray Charles & David Ritz (Discussion leader: Fred Hearns)
- December 16: “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou (Discussion leader: Ashley Morrow)
Participation
The Black History Book Club is a testament to the inclusive spirit of the Tampa Bay community. Joining the group is free and open to the public. This is an excellent opportunity for those who wish to deepen their understanding of Black history and culture through literature.
