Black Roots: From Dobyville to College Hill
October 6, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
FREEJoin us for a discussion with friends and neighbors who lived in 1960s Tampa during segregation. We’ll also watch a clip from the documentary film “The Tampa Technique.”
Black people in Tampa and the surrounding areas began organizing residential communities shortly after the Civil War ended on May 6, 1864. For many years, the largest of these areas (the Scrub) was located between downtown Tampa and Ybor City. This was the foundation of the Central Avenue District. But other Black communities also sprang up: a portion of Port Tampa and Hyde Park (Dobyville) south of today’s Kennedy Boulevard; Spring Hill (the Black section of Sulphur Springs); Bealsville (in eastern Hillsborough County); West Tampa (areas near the Hillsborough River) and College Hill (in the heart of East Tampa).
Black Roots: From Dobyville to College Hill is part of a Tampa Bay History Center initiative in partnership with the Tampa Housing Authority to provide educational experiences in the historic St. James Episcopal Church.
