Holiday Traditions in Florida

We commemorate significant historical events, celebrate New Year's Eve or new seasons, or honor our heritage on holidays. The variety of holiday traditions in Florida reflects the state’s cultural and ethnic diversity. Although Floridians may celebrate different holidays or have different customs, holidays help to unite family, friends, and neighbors and strengthen our common bonds. Using photographs from the past and present, Holiday Traditions in Florida examines how Floridians have celebrated these special days.

Sometimes, things don’t go as planned. The Snow Queen contestants of 1958 did their best to keep the holiday spirit alive after a series of mishaps at the Tampa Snow Show on Franklin Street. This moment, now part of our “Holiday Traditions in Florida” exhibit, captures the resilience that Floridians bring to the season. (Tampa Bay History Center Collection)
