History Adventure Camp in Tampa Bay for Ages 7-11

When school is out, the Tampa Bay History Center becomes a place where children spend their days moving through galleries, working with artifacts, and learning alongside the people who preserve the past.

Families searching for summer camps in Tampa Bay often want more than a place to pass the time. They look for a summer camp for 7–11-year-olds that is structured, safe, and genuinely educational.

Our History Adventure Camp is the perfect place for campers who want to stay active, make friends and come home having learned something meaningful.

Campers learn in small groups that allow for individualized attention and strong peer connections. Programs are led by experienced Florida state-certified classroom teachers who understand curriculum and age-appropriate engagement. Throughout the week, children interact with historians, curators, collections staff, guest speakers and teen volunteers, gaining insight into how history is researched, preserved and presented.

Museum tours and gallery time are central to the experience, allowing campers to explore exhibits in meaningful ways. Participants also receive special opportunities to view artifacts not normally displayed to the public, giving them access rarely available to young learners. The program is a favorite among both campers and parents.

“This is the first and only time I have had my son in ANY after-school activity or summer camp that the directors have let me know so thoroughly everything about the camp and what was going on. It was the best experience both my son and I have had with any camp, hands down. I have already been recommending the History Center to everyone I know.”

Our camp schedule blends hands-on projects, storytelling, artifact study, and movement, with a balance of indoor and outdoor activities that keeps campers engaged and energized.

History Adventure Camp programs

American Girl®

Through engaging storytelling and interactive activities, children discover the worlds of Kirsten Larson™ (1854), Melody Ellison™ (1964) and Julie Albright™ (1974), three American Girl historical characters. American Girl Camp connects beloved characters to the real historical periods they represent.

Along the way, participants learn about the social conditions, daily life and major events that shaped each era, gaining context for the challenges and experiences the characters face while connecting those stories to Tampa history. The program encourages friendship, curiosity and lasting memories.

It brings history to life by connecting key moments from our gallery exhibitions to the time periods represented by the American Girl characters, giving children a stronger understanding of the events, challenges and everyday realities that shaped their world.

Archaeology Camp

Archaeology Camp channels children’s fascination with the past into the scientific study of history. Participants explore how archaeologists and anthropologists investigate human history by excavating sites, analyzing artifacts and using physical evidence to better understand past cultures and societies.

What begins as curiosity about “digging things up” becomes an introduction to research methods, preservation and historical interpretation. Campers gain new knowledge, practical skills and a stronger sense of inquiry.

For this program, we typically feature a guest archaeologist who shares professional insight into the work, methods, and lived experience behind excavating and interpreting history.

Pirates & Explorers

Pirates & Explorers Camp builds on the excitement of adventure stories by examining the documented history behind them. Instead of relying on legend alone, children study explorer and pirate experiences, maritime trade routes, naval conflicts, treasure myths and the development of coastal communities.

The program places Florida and Tampa Bay within broader global exploration and seafaring history. Throughout the week, participants engage in research, storytelling and active learning that brings the region’s maritime past into sharper focus.

Children also meet the Scarlett Fortuna, a Tampa-based privateer crew whose theatrical storytelling and immersive presence create a vivid connection to the region’s maritime history.
