Visitors to this exhibition will experience the history and cultural impact of the guitar through 40 instruments that represent significant moments in America’s evolution, from the earliest Spanish invasion to the nation’s modern status as a global superpower. Video, photographs and illustrations supplement the artifacts and depict important events, artists and instruments of the last century. The exhibition is on view Jan. 31 through May 3, 2026, in the Wayne Thomas Gallery on the fourth floor of the Tampa Bay History Center.

“America at the Crossroads: The GUITAR and a Changing Nation” looks at America’s evolution through the lens of its most popular instrument, an instrument that has been part of the nation’s cultural heritage since its founding. The guitar has served as a symbol of generational differences, racial divide, politics, consumer marketing and fashionable relevance.
