Since the earliest days of exploration and navigation, sailors and sea captains have utilized nautical charts to help guide them during their journeys across the oceans and around the coasts. A variety of printed and manuscript charts were used, and the information gathered to create and update those charts was, at times, protected as if they were military plans.
