OLLI-USF: The History of Tobacco and Cigar Labels

October 14 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Event Series (See All)
Cigar Labels

Explore two fascinating dimensions of Tampa’s cigar industry and its place in Florida history. The first half of this course examines the history of tobacco, including its cultivation, production and importance to Florida’s economy and culture.

The second half turns to the colorful and distinctive world of cigar labels. Participants will examine the artwork, imagery and stories preserved on historic cigar boxes while learning how these labels helped manufacturers distinguish and promote their brands.

Presented by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of South Florida, the course offers adults age 50 and older an engaging, no-pressure opportunity to explore local history, exchange ideas and connect with fellow lifelong learners.

The course will be held at Tampa’s Black History Museum, 1213 N. Central Ave., Tampa, FL 33602.

Registration opens Aug. 31 and must be completed through OLLI-USF.
